Australian Migration News Update

1. Net overseas migration has decreased slightly, but it is still above 300,000.

Australia’s net overseas migration for 2025 was around 300,960 people. This is slightly lower than the previous year, but migration numbers remain high and are a major political issue.

2. Migration is still a hot political topic.

The Opposition argues that migration levels are too high, particularly due to pressure on housing and infrastructure. The government says it is reducing temporary visa numbers and focusing more on skilled migration.

3. The 2026–27 Permanent Migration Program is expected to focus more on people already in Australia.

The government appears to be giving more priority to onshore applicants, especially temporary visa holders who are already living and working in Australia. This means pathways from temporary visas to permanent residency may become more targeted and selective.

4. The next SkillSelect invitation round for subclass 189 is expected by 30 September 2026.

Home Affairs has indicated that the next invitation round for the Skilled Independent visa subclass 189 is expected by 30 September 2026. Applicants should keep their EOI information up to date.
