The Student Visa 500 will allow you to study in Australia while a Student Guardian Visa 590 will allow a guardian (see below for who can be a guardian) to come to Australia to provide care and support for a Student Visa holder who is under 18 years of age.

What can you do with a Student Visa 500 and a Student Guardian Visa 590?

For the Student Visa 500, you can study in Australia with your family members. This visa allows you to work only part-time during your study period, but has no limitations on how much you can work during your school holidays. Under the COVID-19 situation, there is relaxation about working hours for student visa holders working in one of the critical sectors. For the 590 Guardian Visa, you can come to Australia to provide care and support for a relative, under 18 years old, while they study in Australia. You can also study an English course for less than 20 hours per week, or another course for no longer than 3 months. As for work, the Student Guardian Visa 590 does not allow the student’s guardian visa holder to work in Australia.

Who can apply for a Student Visa 500 and a Student Guardian Visa 590?

You need to be at least 6 years old to apply for the Student Visa 500. Plus, you must be registered as a full-time student at a recognized Australian institution for an approved course. Finally, you or your guardian must organize proper welfare arrangements during your stay in Australia if you are under 18.

For the Student Guardian Visa 590, you must be one of the following:

  • a parent of the student
  • a person who has custody of the student
  • a relative (see below for further details) of the student, aged 21 years or older, nominated in writing by a parent or person who has custody of the student

  • parent or step-parent
  • grandparent or step-grandparent
  • sibling or stepsibling
  • aunt, uncle, step-aunt or step-uncle
